As an institution of higher learning UMP is entrusted with a bigger responsibility to make our institution operate sustainably, and to foster more programmes and initiatives towards making the university operation and campuses green. As a teaching university we embrace responsibility in our lecture sessions to ensure that future engineers and technologists that we train shall become a new generation of professionals with far-reaching conscience and responsibility as future staff of their companies, and as members of the community to always think and act to make the Earth a beautiful and comfortable home to live in. As a research university, UMP should be active in conducting research related to resources use efficiency and sustainability for global benefits and for the future survival and comfort our future generation.

In the course of achieving excellence in teaching and research, UMP shall strive to do the following as its GREEN CAMPUS VISION:
UMP is committed to operate in a sustainable manner by being more prudent with its use of energy and other natural resources, as well as to contribute to national and global agenda on environment and sustainability.

This Vision shall be achieved through the following Mission:

1. To be more efficient in our energy consumption (including electricity and other energy forms), taking concrete steps to minimise waste;
2. To create a positive effect on the local environment and community through efficient use of natural resources and efficient management of wastes;
3. To reduce negative impact on the local and global environment at a rate consistent with meeting the national global voluntary initiatives and going further to contribute towards meeting the world target where it is cost-effective to do so.

Based upon the above Vision and Missions, UMP aims to pursue the following initiatives:

1. Reduce our energy consumption through avoidance of wasteful consumption and by being more prudent in our use of energy, particularly electricity and fuel for our transport fleet;
2. Reduce the university’s environmental impact to the locality through better management of natural resources, greening and foresting of our campus – hence contributing towards carbon sequestration globally;
3. Meet the statutory requirements of all relevant legislations and other requirements and exceed these requirements where they best support the university’s other core objectives;
4. Adopt best practices to ensure prevention of air, water and waste pollution;
5. Support national voluntary initiatives to cut down our greenhouse gas emissions as pledged by the Prime Minister in 15th Conference of Parties in December 2009, Copenhagen;
6. Monitor and regularly review the university’s sustainability and environmental performance, and set annual objectives and targets to ensure continuous improvement;
7. Conduct and encourage more research in the campus under themes that include Energy Efficiency, Biodiversity, Sustainability, Renewable Energy Technologies, and Sustainable Indigenous Technologies, as well as the importance of Sustainability and Environmental Protection in our teachings;
8. Make Energy Efficiency, Environment and Carbon Reduction Initiatives as important agendas in the university’s management at various levels from the University Management Board Meeting to meetings at individual faculties and units level;
9. Communicate and sharing through external engagements our knowledge and experience in energy efficiency, efficient use of natural resources and environmental performance, through awareness programmes, training sessions and consultations for staff and students, as well as to local community and industries.
