Takakura Method of Composting

Takakura Method of Composting

The Takakura Home Method is a simple, low-cost, and community-friendly composting technique developed in Surabaya, Indonesia, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It is widely used in Asia, including Malaysia, as an effective way to handle household and community food waste.

UMPSA has incorporated the Takakura composting technique in its waste management initiatives, especially through collaborations with agencies like SWCorp Pahang for community education and training. Participants—including staff, students, and surrounding communities—are taught how to:

  • Prepare the decomposing medium (using rice husks, bran, and soil).
  • Mix food waste such as vegetable scraps, fruit peels, and leftovers into the medium.
  • Maintain the compost by turning it regularly and ensuring proper moisture.
  • Use the resulting compost as organic fertilizer for campus landscaping and green projects.
