Recycling Program for University
The centers manage collection of recyclable material & composting at UMP. Compost & Recycle Centre in UMP Pekan is equipped with rain water harvesting and powered by solar energy. Both centre manage organic & inorganic waste in UMP.
Preloved Gifts & Sales (PGS) Corner is created at UMP’s Library to provide a platform to staff & students to donate and reuse clothes and other materials. This create alternative function to the material other than being disposed. The item can also be recycled
Green Campus Management, a sub-menu on UMP’s website is developed to make it easy for staff to monitor and update current status of waste management especially at their own department. This really help UMP in gathering data related to sustainable waste management. Amount of waste recycled, composted and disposed is monitored through this system.
UMP has enforced a guideline on supplying and recycling of printer’s toner for university’s usage. One company has been appointed to supply toner and collect used toner for recycling of printer’s toner. A flowchart is also distributed on how to return the toner for recycling.
Example of notice board dedicated to promote cycling effort in department. The notice board is managed by the department itself. Recycling bin is also provided nearby the notice board.
Indoor recycle bins are provided at every department to make it easy for staffs and students to recycle. At some department, the domestic waste bin is put beside the recycle bin to get better segregation. By doing so, only recyclable material will be thrown into recycle bin.
Central Laboratory of UMP has converted used wood pallet & plastic bottle as a fountain & garden. A few vegetables are planted inside used plastic bottle. This “Bottlenical Garden” is initiated by the department to support sustainability initiative by UMP.
Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering provided collection centre for plastic bottle nearby its cafeteria. The location and size of the cage has made it easy for staffs & students to deposit their used plastic bottle. This will encourage them to recycle more plastic bottle.
Domestic Waste Bin, Recycle Bin and Food Waste Bin are provided at Cafeteria. The reason for the provision of this bins is to make it easy for user to segregate the waste. Sometime, due to lack of certain waste bin, user tend to throw certain waste into other waste bin. UMP tried to make it easy to staffs and students to discard all type of waste into its designated bin. It is found out that segregation at source is better than segregation at the end of the process.

Sometime, due to lack of certain waste bin, user tend to throw certain waste into other waste bin. UMP tried to make it easy to staffs and students to discard all type of waste into its designated bin. It is found out that segregation at source is better than segregation at the end of the process.
To avoid confusion, UMP has come out with new labelling to be put on bin. The label clearly identify what can be & can’t be thrown in into the bin. UMP feel that by putting pictures instead of writing, it will be easier for the user to identify and segregate waste accordingly.
Waste4Fine is a program by UMP’s Library still on going to encourage students to recycle their plastic bottle. Students can pay their library’s fine by using plastic bottle. The program is conducted every Wednesday. Different size of plastic bottle will have different value. While paying their fine, student also can recycle at the same time.
EKSA is the acronym for Public Sector Conducive Ecosystem. It is led by MAMPU (Administrative Modernization and Management Planning) and it is rebranding for 5S Implementation of Public Sector in 2010. Its purpose is to foster a culture of organizational excellence and a more corporate image for the idea and the creative and innovative activities.
EKSA is an attempt to strengthen the management of the office to create a more conducive environment to help increase UMP employee productivity. The move is in line with efforts to strengthen the organizational culture of high performance and innovative work among personnel UMP through the provision of environmental, workplace culture and values into practice all citizens of public sector agencies.
Through the implementation of these practices can help citizens EKSA UMP design and implement efforts to produce a work environment that is conducive in improving the quality of service delivery to customers and also can improve the safety, comfort and joy to work among UMP staff.
