UMP Engineering Day
UMP Engineering Day, organised by the Mechanical Engineering Professional Student Club (MECHAPRO), provided a platform for school students to explore the various fields of engineering that would spur their interest and help map out their prospective careers.
MECHAPRO members consisted of students from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM).
The programme, organised with the support of Department of Industrial and Community Network (JJIM), involved 40 undergraduates and attracted some 500 school students from Kuantan and Pekan.
There were exhibitions held that were based on Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) and activities organised where the students took part such as ‘TRIUMP’ (glider), mini games and ‘Engineering for Awesome’ (Explorace).
FKM Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Affairs) Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Haji Nik Mohd Zuki officially opened the event. Also present were JJIM Director Dr. Nurul Hazlina Noordin and Programme Advisor Ts. Dr. Siti Haryani Tomadi.
Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Haji Nik Mohd Zuki said the programme was seen to be able to give an impact to school students and for them to obtain information about engineering.
“Development in the world of science and technology is progressing rapidly and requires high commitment to produce quality human capital and focus on interactive and creative engineering learning method,” he said.
He added that from the activities organised by the undergraduates, the school students would be able to apply what they had learned into their own learning style by participating in competitions.
He hoped that programme such as this would be held again in the future because it was a form of exposing students to explore engineering at the university level.
According to programme director Wan Husna Nabilah Meor Jamaludin, the programme was a platform that showed the students about challenges faced in the 4.0 Industrial Revolution and in the Internet of Things (IOT).
She said it would also help build up confidence among the undergraduates to cope with challenges, be it locally or globally, as well as help to promote UMP among the school students and make the university their choice of education destination.
