UMP's Wetland (Lake A)

A wetland is a distinct ecosystem that is inundated by water, either permanently or seasonally, where oxygen-free processes prevail. The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands from other land forms or water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to the unique hydric soil. Wetlands play a number of functions, including water purification, water storage, processing of carbon and other nutrients, stabilization of shorelines, and support of plants and animals. Wetlands are also considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal life.

UMP Pekan Campus is surrounded by 4 man-made lakes with a total area of 15.10 hectares (37.2 acres). The lakes were designed to serve as mitigation measure in the event of flooding, especially during the monsoon season (December to March). They also function as a water recreation area for students, staff and the local community. In this initiative one of the lake was redesigned to serve as a natural wetland. Five groups of wetland plants (submerge, floating leaves, floating plants, marginal/emergent plants and forest species) were planted in this lake. The objective of this initiative is to create a wildlife sanctuary, to improve water quality, to provide recreational activities as well as to promote edu-tourism in UMP Pekan Campus.
