5.3.4 Indicator: Encouraging Women’s Applications in Underrepresented Fields

UMPSA actively encourages women’s participation in academic disciplines where they are traditionally underrepresented, particularly in engineering, technology, and other STEM-related areas. The university adopts a proactive approach through both university outreach initiatives and strategic collaborations with external partners.

Initiative

University Outreach Initiatives

UMPSA conducts ongoing outreach and engagement programmes to inspire young women to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. These initiatives include school visits, open days, workshops, and motivational talks led by successful female academics and alumni who serve as role models. The university also highlights women’s achievements in these areas through media campaigns and student ambassador programmes to challenge stereotypes and encourage interest among female school leavers.

Hands-on STEM outreach activity at SMK (P) Methodist Kuantan
FTKPM, UMPSA organized the Science, Technology, and Innovation 100³ Program at SMK (P) Methodist, Kuantan—an all-girls school—in collaboration with MOSTI, to encourage female students’ interest and participation in STEM. The programme used interactive and hands-on activities to promote engagement in traditionally male-dominated areas such as engineering and technology.
Partnership

Collaborations and Partnerships

In addition, UMPSA collaborates with government agencies, industry partners, community organizations, and NGOs to promote gender inclusivity in education. The university participates in regional and national campaigns that advocate for women’s empowerment and equal access to STEM education and career pathways. Through these partnerships, UMPSA supports scholarships, mentoring, and community engagement projects designed to increase women’s representation and success in male-dominated fields.
