Education for SDGs 

UMPSA demonstrated a strong commitment to meaningful education around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by integrating sustainability themes across multiple programs and levels of study, from undergraduate to postgraduate. The university embedded SDG-related knowledge and skills into 291 courses out of 1,380 offered, covering environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainable development. Through these courses, UMPSA equips students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to address global sustainability challenges, aligning its educational mission with the SDGs and national sustainability priorities.

 

(i) Integrated across full curriculum

UMPSA integrates the principles of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across its full curriculum, ensuring that every student regardless of discipline develops the knowledge, values, and skills to contribute to sustainable development. Sustainability themes are woven into teaching, learning, and assessment across diverse academic programs, reflecting UMPSA’s commitment to holistic education, responsible innovation, and societal impact. 

Engineering and Engineering Technology

Courses across engineering disciplines embed sustainability concepts through design, innovation, and technology applications that support SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Key subjects include:

  •       BEL 4113 Renewable Energy Systems
  •       BVE 2323 Sustainable Engineering Design
  •       BKC 3133 Green Technology and Environmental Engineering
  •       BTV 3123 Industrial Waste Management

Computer Science and Information Technology

The curriculum integrates digital innovation with sustainability goals, focusing on SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Key subjects include:

  •       BCN 2023 Green Computing
  •       BCM 3123 Data Analytics for Sustainable Development
  •       BCS 2233 Information Systems Management

Physical Sciences

Courses emphasize environmental responsibility and resource efficiency in alignment with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Key subjects include:

  •       BPS 2313 Environmental Chemistry
  •       BPS 2423 Materials Science and Sustainability
  •       BSB 1183 Energy and Environmental Physics

Business Management

Business and management programs embed sustainability and ethical governance into their frameworks, supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

Core subjects include:

  •       BPM 2243 Corporate Social Responsibility
  •       BPC 3123 Sustainable Business Strategy
  •       BPM 1233 Entrepreneurship and Innovation
  •       BPC 1133 Ethics and Corporate Governance

 

(ii) Mandatory education for all

UMPSA ensures that all students receive mandatory education related to sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through five core university courses offered by the Centre for Human Sciences. These compulsory subjects are designed to nurture ethical, responsible, and socially conscious graduates equipped to contribute to sustainable development.

  1.  UHS1022 Soft Skills – Develops communication, teamwork, and leadership competencies that promote inclusive and equitable quality education (SDG 4) and support decent work and economic growth (SDG 8).

  2.  UHC2022 Penghayatan Etika dan Peradaban – Cultivates understanding of ethics, civilization, and intercultural harmony, directly supporting peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16) and reduced inequalities (SDG 10).

  3. UHE3302 Introduction to Political Science – Enhances awareness of governance systems, citizenship, and global cooperation, aligning with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

  4.  UHC1052 Kursus Integriti dan Anti-Rasuah (KIAR) – Promotes integrity, transparency, and anti-corruption values, reinforcing SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
  1. UHE3032 Introduction to Human Behaviour – Strengthens understanding of human values, social responsibility, and behavioral change, which underpin SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). 
  1. UHC 2333 Community Service and Social Engagement – Provides experiential learning through volunteerism and outreach projects that advance SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

 
(iii) Optional education for all

UMPSA offers a wide range of elective and program-specific subjects that incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), allowing students from all disciplines to deepen their sustainability knowledge according to their interests and career pathways. These courses integrate environmental stewardship, ethical leadership, technological innovation, and community engagement, reflecting UMPSA’s holistic commitment to sustainability education.

Elective SDG-related subjects include:

  1. BPP 1333 Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development – Focuses on green technologies and sustainable infrastructure aligned with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
  1. UHC 1123 Ethics in Technology and Society – Explores the social implications of technological advancement, supporting SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). 

  2. UHM 1133 Environmental Management and Conservation – Promotes awareness of biodiversity protection and resource efficiency, linked to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
