Aquaponics System Using Effluent from Sewage Treatment Plant in UMPSA

Aquaponics System Using Effluent from Sewage Treatment Plant in UMPSA

This project is conducted within UMPSA’s compound, with the aquaponics system specifically located as close as possible to the effluent point of the sewage treatment plant so that transporting the effluent will not be an issue. Figure 1 (Location A – In red rectangular) is where the largest sewage treatment plant in UMP Gambang is located, in between the Faculty of Computer Systems & Software Engineering and Block X catering to 5,000 Population Equivalent (PE) capacity.

For this project, the media bed unit system is design whereas is space-efficient, the cost is relatively low and it is the most suitable method for beginners. Figure 2 shows an illustration of the media bed unit designed while Figure 3 shows the schematics of the water flow in the media bed unit from the top view and side view. The aquatic organisms used in this system are tilapia fishes whereas the plants are winged beans as seen in Figure 4 and Figure 5, respectively.

Project Outcome
1.1 Sewage treatment plant effluent is being used in media bed aquaponics system.
1.2 Increase of UI Greenmetric marks in the waste category for UMP.
1.3 Tilapia fishes and winged beans to eat as the ultimate outcome.
